Japan Market Research Report

On 11 March a big earthquake and tsumani hit the eastern part of Japan. The incident of Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant has had a certain impact on the electricity production in Japan.

After the Earthquake on 11 of March, the total electricity production in Japan has considerably declined; 64.4 billiion kWh in April, showing 11 million kWh of decrease over the previous month, a slight recover in May (6.51 billion kWh), followed by another recovery in June (6.91 billion kWh). Focusing on the electricity production in June 2011, it shows a 2.75 million decrease compared with the same month last year. After the Earthquake, the nuclear power generation shows a large decrease (from 21.23 million kWh in March 2011 to 12.95 million in June 2011). The hydro power generation compensates the decrease, doubled from 4.71 million kWh in March to 8.59 million kWh in June. On the other hand, the thermal power generation decreased from 48.93 million kWh in March to 40.89 million kWh in April, but it showed a quick recovery in May and June (47.39 million kWh in June). The solar power generation still makes only a very small part of the total generation, but it has jumped sharply to 1,5 million kWh after the Earthquake compared with 35 thousand kWh in 2010).
