Indoor Fireworks Blasting Off In Japan

One of the major summer pastimes in Japan apart from the beach is the time-old tradition of numerous fireworks displays that annually take place between July and August. The largest is the Tokyo Bay Festival which has approximately 12,000 rounds of fireworks during the 75 minute show. Approximately 7000 seats are reserved for neighbourhood residents whilst countless thousands descend on the bay in their “Yukata” (casual summer cotton Kimonos) to enjoy the fascinating illumination.

Sega Toys, a subsidiary of Sega Corporation, has come up with the latest invention to appeal to theses firework lovers! The “Uchiage Hanabi”-“Firework Launcher” is a fireworks projector using five different projections though its LED lenses to display firework images on walls and ceilings. To add to the real-life experience, the sound tracks everything from the blast to the ultimate explosion. Consumers can customize their display by drawing on the special plates provided to create their own unique fireworks.

Costing approximately $150, it is sold in major Japanese Consumer Electronics and Home Entertainment stores including Bic Camera and Yodobashi. This clearly appeals to a nation where the latest gadgets and electronic devices are always in demand. After all, this is the country which has its own world-famous “Electric Town” better known to locals as Akihabara. This is a major shopping area for a labyrinth of electronics found in central Tokyo.

After the craze of Nintendo`s Wii ( for all generations), it appears that Japanese people are looking for additional ways to spend, time with families and friends alike. Japan`s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare reported that in 2006, average monthly working hours stood at 100.5 hours. If we fast-forward to 2009 the average is 95 hours (January to June). With an apparent increase in free time; entertainment is sought by groups of friends as well as parents with their children. There is an evident strong link between the nostalgic past and modern times.

The nation seems to be waiting for the next attraction to bring families closer together, both young and old!
