Do you go to hair salons or barber shops?(SA）

【Whether people go to a hair salon or a barber shop. N=300】
【Overall】
62.7% of respondents answered that they go to hair salons whereas 33% go to barber shops. 4.3% answered ‘both’.
【Sex, Age Group】
Male: response was as follows:
No.1: Barber Shop – 65.3%
No.2: Hair Salon – 28%
No.3: Both – 6.7%
The older generations tend to go to barber shops, more than they go to hair salon.
Female response as follows:
No.1: Hair Salon – 97.3%
No.2: Both – 2%
No.3: Barber Shop – 0.7%
100% of the female respondents in their twenties visit hair salons.

【Reasons　N=300】

■Barber Shop

・It is cheaper and faster. (Male 20’s Student)
・They do not shave my face at a hair salon. (Male 30’s Doctor)
・I feel that hair salons are for women. (Male 30’s Administrator)
・I do not have to worry about anything when I am at the barber shop. (Male 40’s Clark)
・I have always gone to a barber shop. (Male 40’s Self-employed)
・Because my parents own a barber shop. (Female 50’s Housewife)

Almost everyone in favor of barber shops is male and the main reasons to go to the barber shop are for shaving as well as being easier and faster than hair salons.

■Hair Salon

・Hair salons are more modern than barber shops. (Male, 20’s Government Employee)
・I go there with my wife. (Male 30’s Engineer)
・The hair styling is more modern. (Male 40’s Sales)
・I think barber shops are for men only. (Female 20’s Student)
・The hair styles are more fashionable than at a barber shop. (Female 30’s Housewife)
・I feel that they have better skills to cut, color and shampoo my hair. (Female 40’s Administrator)

Hair salons are mostly frequented by women although a few males also go. The main reasons are that they are modern, fashionable and they have a favorite hair stylist. There is an overwhelming feeling that barber shops are only for men.

■Both

・I cut my hair very short during summer. In June and July I go to the barber shop but for the rest of the year I go to the hair salon. (Male 20’s Part-Timers)
・I prefer to get my hair cut at the hair salon but I go to the barber shop to get a shave. (Male 30’s Government Employee)
・When I am in a rush, I go to the barber shop. (Male 30’s Administrator)
・I go to the hair salon to get a cut or perm but sometimes I go to the barber shop to get my face shaved. (Female 30’s Part-Timers)
・I go to the barber shop to get face shaved and I go to hair salon to get my hair cut or permed. (Female 40’s Housewife)
・I go to the barber shop to have a shave. It is very good for my face and I feel the barber shop is better for hair-cut. On the other hand, I think the hair salon is better for coloring and styling. (Female 40’s Administrator)

Male: They use both depending on how busy they are and their feelings on a particular day..
Female: They go to the barber shop for face shaving only.

【Overall】
55.3% answered that they go to the hair salon or barber shop once or twice a month. 33% go once per month. 90% of respondents go at least once every three months.
【By Gender】
Male: More males go to hair salons and barber shops than females more often than female.
Female: 60% people answered they go to hair salons or barber shops once every two or three months which is less than their male counterparts.

What is the most important point when choosing your hair salon or barber shop?（SA）

【Overall】
Most popular reasons for choosing hair salons or barber shops were as follows:
No.1: Skills of workers – 25.7%
No.2: Atmosphere – 19.7%
No.3: Location (close to home or near to the station) – 17.7%.
【By Gender and Age】
Males: 30% answered that the atmosphere was a key factor for them . Males in their thirties and forties were most concerned about the price (32% and 42% respectively). Location is considered an important factor across all age groups. .
Females: In every age group, the skills of the hair stylist are considered to be an important point with 34-44%. For those respondents in their thirties, only hospitality seems to be an important point.

How do you explain your desired hairstyle ?（SA）

【How to explain your desired hairstyle. N=300】
【Overall】
Nearly half of the respondents (47.7%) explain their desired hairstyle by the length and style. 14% ask for the same hairstyle as usual.
【Sex, Age Group】
Males: 54% of males in their thirties explained their desired hairstyle based on length and style which is slighter higher than the overall average. Those asking for the same style as usual or letting their hairdresser decide was also common. For respondents in their forties nearly a third (32%) ask for the same style as usual.
Females: Across all age groups, females generally explained their desired hairstyle based on length and style. 20% tend to bring magazines or photos to explain their desired hairstyle which is as rarely seen by their male counterparts.

Are you satisfied with your hairdresser’s skills?（SA）

【Whether people are satisfied with the skills or not. N=300】
【Overall】
76.6% answered that they are satisfied with their hairdresser’s skills. Only 4.3% answered that they were not satisfied. Also, for those respondents who were not satisfied, 46.2% answered that they will change the shop when they are not satisfied with the skills.

【Overall】
67.5% of the respondents feel uncomfortable when they go to the hair salon or barber shop for the first time. Females generally tend to feel uncomfortable compared to their male counterparts.

・ I am afraid that they cannot give me a good hair cut. (Male 30’s Unemployed)
・ I do not want to keep explaining my favorite style and I feel worried about how strong their skills are. (Male 40’s Executive)
・ I feel sorry for the staff I used to go to. (Female 20’s Others)
・ I do not know their skills and I do not want to waste my time explaining my desired hairstyle each time. (Female 30’s Part-Timers)
・ I am not sure whether there will be someone who can do what I want them to do. (Female 40’s Housewife)

■To some extent

・ I am afraid if it is going to turn out the way I want it to. (Male 30’s Executives)
・ I do not know if they have good hospitality or not (I have experienced really bad manners before). (Male 40’s Engineer)
・ I just do not like a new atmosphere. It is annoying to explain how I want my hair styled every time. (Female 20’s Part-Timers)
・ I feel very tired even though I am the one who is paying. (Female 30’s Housewife)
・ I do not want to feel sad because of an unsatisfactory hair cut. (Female 40’s Administrator)
